The robot is named after my uncle Lib. "Libby" is what his life-long love, my Aunt Hilda, always called him. |

Uncle Lib was a proud alumnus of Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University).
In the 30's, when he was there on a football scolarship, Tech was a powerhouse
in football. Uncle Lib was well known as the player who caught the touchdown
pass to beat Notre Dame in '33. He graduated in 1935. Early on his career turned to truck sales. In the 1950's Uncle Lib and Aunt Hilda started Connecticut White Truck Company in New Haven. They made the business flourish and it gave them the wherewithal for their financial generosity. Aunt Hilda is also a Tech alum and the two have been very giving to the university over the years. But, by far, the most important gifts were emotional ones to their family and others. Uncle Lib and Aunt Hilda never had children of their own so they broadened that place in their hearts to include all their many nieces and nephews. My wife, our children, and I have been lucky recipients of that love. I was always made to feel special because I am the one of the family who followed in their footsteps by going to their beloved Carnegie Tech. The simple fact is, they made me feel special before I went. Actually, all of the family was made to feel special, each for our own separate reasons. Uncle Lib has been foundation stone for all of us. As you would imagine, he was a goal driven man who was very competitive. He had just completed one of his goals, he lived past 90 years old. Unfortunately he just missed the next one. He and Aunt Hilda would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary less than 1 month after he passed away. He was also a loving mentor who knew the right words to help us along. Usually phone calls and visits were fun and encouraging. But not always. When I was at Tech, I was having trouble with my grades and was rationalizing away the issues. On a call I can't forget, uncle Lib had the right words at that time for me. They weren't fun to hear, but they were very effective and have literally changed my life since. |
